How to Get Your Restaurant Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI (UAE)
When someone asks ChatGPT for "good restaurants near me", it does not consult a secret list. It runs a web search. OpenAI says ChatGPT uses general location from the person's IP address and rewrites the question into a search such as "top restaurants San Francisco", sometimes sent to partner search providers (OpenAI Help Center, checked 23 October 2026). Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode work from Google's normal search index, and Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in them (Google Search Central, updated December 2025). So getting your restaurant recommended by AI comes down to being easy to find, and easy to read, in ordinary search.
How Does ChatGPT Choose Restaurants?
From OpenAI's own help page:
- It searches the web and can use location information to find local results, including restaurants. On iOS and Android, results may include a map.
- It uses general location, not your exact location: a "restaurants near me" question becomes a search for top restaurants in that city.
- It ranks results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed.
- To be eligible, a website must allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot to crawl it, and the host or CDN must allow traffic from OpenAI's published search-bot IP addresses.
That last point is the one restaurants miss. Some website builders and security services block unknown bots by default. If OAI-SearchBot cannot reach your site, ChatGPT cannot cite it.
What Does Google Need for AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google's guidance is short and plain (Google Search Central):
| What Google says | What it means for a restaurant |
|---|---|
| No additional requirements; no special schema or AI text files needed | Ignore anyone selling an "AI file" for your website |
| A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet | Your website must be in Google's index first |
| Keep your Business Profile information up to date | Hours, phone, menu link, photos, holiday hours |
| Make important content available in textual form | Menu, cuisine, prices and location as text, not only images |
| Structured data must match the visible text | If you use markup, it must say the same as the page |
Google also uses "query fan-out": AI Mode can run several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. A question like "family-friendly Indian restaurant in Al Barsha with parking" can trigger searches for each part. Restaurants whose pages and profiles clearly state cuisine, area, family facilities and parking give the AI something to match.
What Should a UAE Restaurant Fix First?
1. Your Google Business Profile
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking (Google Business Profile Help). Your profile feeds both the map results and, per Google's AI guidance, its AI features. Check name, address, hours, phone, category, menu link and recent photos. Step by step: get your restaurant onto Google Maps.
2. Your menu as text
A menu that exists only as a photo on Instagram or a scanned PDF is the most common gap. Put dishes, prices, cuisine and dietary information (halal, vegetarian, gluten-free) on a normal web page. A digital menu page works if it is real text that search engines can read.
3. Reviews that keep coming
Reviews feed prominence. Ask every guest the same way and reply to every review; Google's policy prohibits incentives and selectively asking only happy guests. See our Google reviews guide for restaurants.
4. Answers to the questions diners actually ask
People ask AI tools full questions: "Which restaurant in JLT has a kids' menu?", "Is there a quiet place for a business lunch in DIFC?", "Where can I get Kerala food delivered in Al Nahda?" If your website states the answers (your area, cuisine, kids' menu, private dining, delivery zones, parking), your restaurant can match them. Our AI local SEO guide covers the wider picture.
5. The same details everywhere
Your name, address and phone should be written the same way on your website, Google profile, delivery apps and social media. Mismatches make it harder for any system to be sure it is the same restaurant.
How Do You Know If It Is Working?
- ChatGPT: OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links from ChatGPT search, so those visits appear in Google Analytics under that source.
- Google: Google says sites in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in your normal Search Console Performance report, within the "Web" search type. Long, conversational queries and short follow-ups such as "in aed" or "with parking" are a sign your pages are being used inside AI answers.
What Doesn't Work
- Paying for "guaranteed AI ranking". Neither OpenAI nor Google offers it.
- Special "AI files" or extra schema as a shortcut. Google says neither is needed.
- Fake or incentivised reviews. They break Google's policy and put your profile at risk.
